COURSE DESCRIPTION

The mini residency in Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) continuing education seminar will address an update on the TMD diagnosis and treatment. Interest in TMD has gone through evolutionary and revolutionary changes.  Consensus on the treatment of TMD has been slowly developing but there is still great controversy over appropriate treatment for these problems. This course will provide training commensurate with standards of care that have been developing in the academic communities around the world over.  At the completion of the program, the dentist should be able to better understand TMD, make a proper diagnosis and develop a treatment on TMD.

COURSE SCHEDULE

8:30 AM-9:00AM - Registration & breakfast

9:00AM-4:00PM – Lecture (Lunch included) 

Session 1

TMJ anatomy, the concepts and fundamentals of pain, musculoskeletal disorders, Neuropathic disorders, TMJ imaging, Relation between Occlusion and TMD, adjunct therapy for orofacial pain, orthotic therapy, and a review of other common orofacial pain conditions.

9:00AM-12:00PM – Lecture

Session 2

TMD treatment, medication in orofacial pain, orthotic therapy, treatment of patients with disk displacement with reduction.

12:00-1:00 Lunch

1:00PM-4:00PM – Hands on - Session 3 Hands-on clinical examination and documentation, hands on injection therapy

INSTRUCTOR BIO

Diego Dalla Bona, DDS, PhD

Dr. Diego Dalla Bona received his Dental Degree in 2001 from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), in Brazil.  After practicing general dentistry for 2 years, Dr. Dalla Bona traveled to Japan, where he received his Philosophy Doctorate (PhD) Certificate in 2007.  During his four years in Japan, Dr. Dalla Bona also received research and clinical training in Orthodontics at Hiroshima University. Since graduating from Hiroshima University, he has been very involved in academics. For several years, Dr. Dalla Bona was the Director of Clinical Orthodontics for a private clinic located in Brazil. Before moving to United States, Dr. Dalla Bona earned a 2-year specialty certificate in Prosthodontics from SL Mandic, Brazil. Once in America, Dr. Dalla Bona completed a 2-year AEGD residency in Orofacial Pain at the University of Southern California in 2015.  His major areas of scientific research include Dental Ceramics, Occlusion, Bonding and Temporomandibular Disorders. Dr. Dalla Bona is an internationally recognized lecturer; he is the author of several scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Dalla Bona is an active member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the American Dental Association and the Florida Dental Association.  Dr. Dalla Bona is a licensed dentist in Washington and Florida. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cariology and Restorative Dentistry at Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

At the completion of this program dentist will be able to understand:

  • Physical evaluation of patients with TMD
  • Imaging of the TM joint
  • Introduction to dental sleep apnea
  • Diagnosis in Orofacial Pain
  • Myofascial pain and treatment protocol
