The course offers a combination of theory and hands-on practice that will reaffirm dental radiographic principles and practices necessary for certification. The course covers the historical background of X-rays, radiation physics, biology, radiation protection, infection control, dental X-ray machine components, dental film, digital receptor, anatomical landmarks, bitewings, periapical exposures, processing and mounting films, and identifying and correcting exposure or processing errors. 

This program for the dental assistant meets the requirements for radiography training for dental assistants in the state of Florida (Chapter 64B-9.011)

Dr. Hogge

Dr. Maritzabel Hogge

Dr. Hogge received her D.D.S. degree from Universidad El Bosque School of Dentistry in Bogotá, Colombia (1992-1995) and Pontificia Universidad Javeriana School of Dentistry in Bogotá, Colombia (1995-1998). In addition, she received her M.S. in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology from the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry (2005-2008). The master’s program consisted of academic teaching and clinical components with emphasis on oral and maxillofacial radiology, biology, radiation physics, and protective measures.  In July 2008 Dr. Hogge accepted the position at NSU College of Dental Medicine as an assistant professor in the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology of the Department of Diagnostic Sciences. Her research experience and master’s thesis involved the “Precision of Cephalometric Landmark Identification 3D vs. 2D: Comparing CBCT Half-Skull Projections, MPR-Rendered Volumes, and Conventional Cephalograms for Relative Location of Cephalometric Landmarks and Precision of Localization in Pretreated Orthodontic Patients.”

Dr. Choi

Dr. Eun Choi

Dr. Choi earned her D.D.S. and M.S. degrees in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology from Seoul National University School of Dentistry in Seoul, South Korea. In addition, she received her D.M.D. degree from NSU’s College of Dental Medicine. The master’s program focused on studying diagnostic oral and maxillofacial images, developing new dental imaging techniques, diagnostic imaging of TMJ and salivary glands, and cephalometrics analysis and radiation physics. Currently, she serves as clinical assistant professor in oral and maxillofacial radiology at NSU’ College of Dental Medicine.

Educational Objectives and Benefits:

  • recognize applications of radiography in dental practice
  • describe the mechanism of the X-ray generation
  • list components of X-ray machines and explain their functions
  • understand image receptors, their advantages, and disadvantages
  • practice intraoral bisecting angle and paralleling radiographic techniques
  • effectively use intraoral film holders and accessories
  • process images chemically and digitally
  • correctly identify maxillary and mandibular anatomic landmarks
  • relate a general knowledge of radiation biology
  • explain radiation protection terms
  • describe procedures to protect the patient and the operator from unnecessary X-ray exposure
  • describe infection-control procedures
  • maintain a quality assurance program



Minimum 3 months of continuous on-the-job training through assisting in the positioning and exposing of dental radiographic film under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist, and be at least 18 years of age, (Chapter 64B5-9.011). Signed acknowledgement of meeting these prerequisites is required.

Participants may be dismissed from course if found lacking appropriate dental experience.

Dental Qualification Form 

Radiology Certification (course completion)

Radiography certification is obtained through the Department of Health by submitting documentation of successful completion of a Board approved certification course; after completing three months of on-the-job training through assisting in the positioning and exposing of dental radiographic film under the direct supervision of a Florida licensed dentist.  Department of Health application and fee is required, in addition to the CDE course.
