Dr. Antonson received his D.D.S. degree from Loyola University, Chicago. He served as a Naval Dental Officer at Great Lakes Naval Hospital while maintaining two part-time dental practices in the Chicago area. He has been in private dental practice in Illinois and Florida, and then he joined the faculty at the University of Florida College of Dentistry. In this capacity he held many academic positions including Chair of Operative Dentistry, Director of Clinics, and President of the Faculty Assembly. He has been voted Teacher of the Year on numerous occasions and honored by President Gerald Ford for his Service to the Profession. He has been a member of OKU, the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the International Association of Dental Facial Esthetics, as well as being the Vice Chairman of the World Federation of Laser Dentistry (WFLD) North American and Canadian Division.
Dr. Antonson earned his Master's Degree in Education from the University of Florida. In 2000 he was invited to assume the position as Director of Clinical Research for the Dentsply Caulk, and thereby left his position at University of Florida as tenured Professor of Operative Dentistry. In 2001 he was appointed as Professor and Chair of Cariology and Restorative Dentistry and Clinic Director at Nova Southeastern University, College of Dental Medicine (NSU) in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Until recently, he served as Professor, Department of Restorative Dentistry, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Interim Associate Dean for Advanced Education, and has served as Associate Chair of Restorative Dentistry and Interim Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the School of Dental Medicine, University at Buffalo, SUNY.
Dr. Antonson rejoined NSU in 2021, as the Associate Dean and founding director for the Clearwater International Dental Graduate Program. Currently he is serving as the Associate Dean for Continuing Education and Intramural Affairs at NSU.
His research interests include adhesive dentistry, micro-conservative dentistry, cariology, remineralization, dental lasers, scanning electron microscopy for providing in-vivo testing of dental materials, periodontal/restorative relationships, polymerization techniques, indirect restoration techniques, ergonomics, CAD-CAM, ceramic-based restorations, interprofessional education, international dentist education, and esthetic dentistry.
His curriculum vitae lists over two hundred national and international presentations as well as many publications including texts, teaching manuals, research grants and abstracts, articles and book chapters.
