This workshop will discuss the prevalence of human trafficking globally, in the USA, and Florida. This dental professions-focused session will describe the oral health risks and consequences of trafficking. Participants will understand the role of dental professionals have in identifying and referring suspected victims to appropriate resources. Concrete steps to take if patient is suspected of being a human trafficking victim will be reviewed. Trauma-informed care approaches to this population will be discussed.

Brianna Black Kent, Ph.D., RN
Dr. Kent is an Associate Professor at Nova Southeastern University (NSU). She is the co-founder of the NSU Coalition for Research and Education Against Trafficking and Exploitation. Dr. Kent is a nurse, psychotherapist, and trained mediator. Her professional experience focuses on trauma among child, adolescent, and adult populations. Dr. Kent was awarded five grants for her research on human trafficking. She was an invited presenter at the 2019 American Dental Education Association on the collaborative model between CREATE and the College of Dental Medicine to provide trauma-informed dental care to survivors of trafficking. Dr. Kent has participated on two Congressional round tables on human trafficking and presented at national and international conferences. Her research was accepted for publication in an international journal.
Sandrine Gaillard-Kenney, Ed.D.
Dr. Gaillard-Kenney is an Associate Professor at Nova Southeastern University (NSU). She is the co-founder of the NSU Coalition for Research and Education Against Trafficking and Exploitation. Dr. Gaillard-Kenney was funded to research the effectiveness of human trafficking training in 2011 and 2013. In 2015, the Community Foundation of Broward awarded Dr. Gaillard-Kenney a private grant for human trafficking education for health care providers, mental health and allied health professionals. Dr. Gaillard-Kenney was awarded two grants in 2019 to provide free, direct interprofessional health care services for victims of human trafficking. Dr Gaillard-Kenney teaches courses about human trafficking at the undergraduate and doctoral levels. The United States Department of State invited Dr. Gaillard-Kenney to participate in a discussion of the problem of human trafficking with governmental and non-governmental representatives from Azerbaijan. She participated on two Congressional round tables on human trafficking and presents her research on human trafficking education for the health professions at national and international conferences. Her research was accepted for publication in an international journal.
