Nitrous Oxide-Oxygen Training

Course Description

This program is designed to train participants in the administration of nitrous oxide inhalation analgesia. In addition, the integration of oral sedation will be emphasized. The program involves lecture and hands-on participation. Individual experience is under faculty supervision. Participants are required to purchase "Handbook of Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen Sedation".  Participants shall demonstrate competency by earning a passing grade on the posttest.  A passing grade must be achieved for continuing education credits to be awarded.

This course does not qualify participants for a conscious sedation permit in Florida which, by definition, includes intravenous sedation.

Instructor Bio:

Dr. Steven Kaltman, DMD

Dr. Kaltman is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. He completed his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Montefiore University Hospital. He then served as program director and chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the University of Pittsburgh Montefiore University Hospital, chair And program director at Allegheny General Hospital, and chair and program director at MCP/Hahnemann Medical School and Allegheny University Hospitals. He currently serves as chair of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Nova Southeastern University and Broward Health Medical Center and division director at Memorial Regional and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. He is past president of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Dr. Edward Fellows, DDS

Dr. Fellows received his D.D.S. degree from McGill University in 1962 and practiced restorative dentistry in Montreal, Canada. In 1978, he moved to South Florida to provide restorative and cosmetic dentistry in Hallandale Beach. Dr. Fellows held the position of chief of inhalation sedation in the Department of Dentistry at Jewish General Hospital in Montreal. He’s lectured on pain control, patient management, and nitrous oxide analgesia and conscious sedation techniques using nitrous oxide and oxygen throughout Canada, the United States, and France. Dr. Fellows participated in programs at Miami Children’s Hospital, lecturing on inhalation sedation/analgesia using nitrous oxide and oxygen. In August 1997, Dr. Fellows joined the faculty of NSU’s College of Dental Medicine with the ranking of adjunct clinical assistant in the Department of Restorative Dentistry. He lectures to second-, third-, and fourth-year dental students on the topic “Finding Solutions to Unusual Dental Situations."

  • administer nitrous oxide – oxygen analgesia with confidence
  • incorporate an oral sedative protocol into routine practice
  • understand the contraindications and complications related to the use of nitrous oxide and triazolam (Halcion®) or other benzodiazepines
  • establish a risk-management protocol for the safe use of inhalation and oral sedatives
